Where to Start
Every application journey begins with one question: which tier are you eligible for right now? The answer determines everything else — what documentation you need, what fee you will pay, and how long the process will take.
If you have never held an ICONIC Board credential, you must start with Tier I — the IBC-HHA™ (ICONIC Board Certified Holistic Health Associate). This is true regardless of your experience level, academic credentials, or years in practice. The IBC-HHA™ is the entry point, and all other tiers build from it.
If you already hold an active ICONIC Board credential, you may apply to advance to the next sequential tier when you meet its requirements. Review the advancement guide to understand the exact requirements for each tier transition.
Not sure where you fit? Read through the individual credential FAQ pages for each tier — IBC-HHA™, IBC-HHP™, and so on — to understand which tier your current qualifications match. Then apply for that tier (or the tier below it if you do not yet hold the prerequisite credential).
Step 1: Choose Your Tier and Review Requirements
Before gathering any documentation, confirm that you understand and meet the requirements for the tier you are targeting. Each tier has specific, non-negotiable requirements:
- Tier I (IBC-HHA™): Recognized holistic health training completion
- Tier II (IBC-HHP™): Active IBC-HHA™ + 200+ practice hours + 2 peer references
- Tier III (IBC-HHE™): Active IBC-HHP™ + documented teaching activity + curriculum contribution
- Tier IV (IBC-HHD™): Active IBC-HHE™ + doctoral-level qualification + field leadership
- Tier V (IBC-DHH™): Active IBC-HHD™ + pass board examination
The full requirements page provides detailed breakdowns for each tier including what counts as qualifying training, practice, and credentials.
Step 2: Gather Your Documentation
The most common reason for application delays is incomplete documentation. Before submitting, assemble the following based on your target tier:
- Training transcripts or completion certificates from recognized holistic health programs (required for all tiers)
- Practice hour log in the board's prescribed format (Tier II and above)
- Peer reference letters completed on the official ICONIC Board reference form (Tier II)
- Teaching documentation — attendance records, program descriptions, supervisor letters (Tier III)
- Curriculum contribution evidence — syllabi, course materials, advisory records (Tier III)
- Academic doctoral transcripts or diploma (Tier IV)
- Field leadership documentation — publications, organizational records, standards contributions (Tier IV)
All documents must be submitted in English or with certified English translation. Photocopies are generally acceptable; originals may be requested for verification if questions arise. See the documentation guide for full requirements on acceptable formats.
Step 3: Submit Your Application Online
All applications are submitted through the ICONIC Board's online application portal at iconicboard.org/apply. The portal will walk you through the application form, allow document uploads, and collect the application fee by credit card or ACH.
Before submitting, review your application carefully. Common errors that delay processing:
- Incomplete practice hour logs (missing dates, modality descriptions, or client contact hours)
- Reference letters not submitted on the official form
- Training transcripts from providers not recognized by the board
- Applying for a tier without holding an active credential at the previous tier
- Doctoral credentials not accompanied by official transcripts
Step 4: The Review Period
After your complete application is received, the board's credentialing committee begins its review. The standard review period is 4-6 weeks from the date the board receives a complete application — meaning all required documents are present and the application fee is paid.
If your application is incomplete, the board will notify you of what is missing. The review clock pauses until the missing items are received.
During the review period, the board may contact peer references directly to verify their letters. Applicants are sometimes asked to provide additional documentation if questions arise about any aspect of their submission. Responding promptly to any board requests avoids further delays.
Step 5: Credential Issuance and Next Steps
Upon approval, you will receive a notification by email confirming the award of your credential. The board will:
- Issue your official ICONIC Board certificate by digital delivery (physical certificates available on request)
- Add your listing to the ICONIC Board public practitioner directory
- Provide your wallet card and credential verification number
- Confirm your first annual renewal date
You may begin using your credential designation immediately upon receiving the award notification. You do not need to wait for the physical certificate to arrive before appending the credential to your name in professional contexts.
Review the post-application guide for details on what happens immediately after you apply, how to track your application status, and what to do if you have not heard back within the standard review window.
